Search a state census
Find out whether your ancestor's state took its own census between the federal ones, and look for the family in one of them.
Several states counted their people in the years between federal censuses, so a state census can catch a birth, a death or a move that the ten-year federal count missed.
Your steps this week
- Open the state's guide and look for state census years in the facts at the top, and for where the guide says you can see them free.
- Pick the state census closest to a gap or a question in your research.
- Find the family and copy every person listed, with ages and any birthplace.
- Compare the household with the federal census before and after it.
- Note who is new and who is gone, and what record to search next.
