Gdn.

Gdn. in court, probate and tax records means guardian, the person appointed to look after a minor's or ward's property and affairs.

Gdn. is a common short form of guardian in probate dockets and accounts, as in Wm. Sayre, gdn. of the minor heirs of Jas. Sayre. A guardian looked after the property and affairs of a minor or other ward.

A gdn. entry points to guardianship papers. A guardian usually had to post a bond and give the court a yearly account and a final one, and these papers name the ward. Read who the guardian was for: it was not always a parent.
