My
My in a name column of an old record is a contraction of the first name Mary.
My keeps the first and last letters of Mary and drops the middle, so in name lists it has no period. The y was often raised above the line.
It is easy to read My as the ordinary word my or as a slip of the pen. In a list of names, a My followed by a surname is most likely Mary, but look for the name in full elsewhere.
