Sus.
Sus. is an old abbreviation of the first name Susan or Susanna, found in deeds, wills, church registers and census pages.
Sus. is a clerk's shortening of the given name Susan or Susanna. Busy writers cut common first names down to a few letters, often raising the last letters above the line, and the habit runs through deeds, wills, tax lists and census pages.
Susan and Susanna were often treated as one name, and the same woman may be written both ways in different records. The longer form Susna also appears. Do not split her into two people only because the spelling changes.
As seen in a recordName column of the 1870 census
