Xtian

Xtian is an old abbreviation of the first name Christian, found in deeds, wills, church registers and census pages.

Xtian is a clerk's shortening of the given name Christian. Busy writers cut common first names down to a few letters, often raising the last letters above the line, and the habit runs through deeds, wills, tax lists and census pages.

The X stands for the Greek letter chi, the first letter of Christ, a shortcut also seen in Xmas and Xtopher. Christian was used as a man's first name especially in German and Scandinavian families. Some clerks wrote Chr. instead.
