Addison's disease

Addison's disease is failure of the adrenal glands, causing weakness, weight loss and darkened skin; it was named for Thomas Addison, who described it in 1855.

The adrenal glands stop making enough of their hormones. Symptoms develop slowly and include belly pain, weakness, weight loss and darkening of the skin, and a sudden crisis can be fatal.

The disease is named after Thomas Addison, who first described it in 1855. IPUMS gives Addison's disease its own code in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
