Anemia
Anemia meant too little blood or too few red cells, leaving a person pale and weak; the Census Bureau warned it was often only a symptom.
IPUMS puts anemia and chlorosis in one code. The 1911 Census Bureau manual's title anaemia, chlorosis asks the doctor to state the form or cause.
Its standard certificate instructions list anaemia that is merely a symptom among terms not to report when a definite disease can be named. On an old record, anemia may be the visible sign of another illness.
