Chin cough

Chin cough, also chincough or kinkcough, is an old name for whooping cough, a bacterial infection with violent coughing fits, deadliest in babies.

Chin cough, chincough and kinkcough were older names for whooping cough, now called pertussis. The disease causes long fits of coughing followed by a gasping whoop as the child breathes in.

It was a leading cause of death in infants, who could choke or develop pneumonia. Hooping cough is another old spelling.
