Congestion of the brain
Congestion of the brain was a vague 1800s diagnosis for sudden brain symptoms thought to come from too much blood in the head.
Congestion of the brain, or cerebral congestion, was a label doctors used before high blood pressure was understood. It was given for headaches, seizures, stupor or sudden death that seemed to come from blood pressing on the brain.
It covered many different conditions, including stroke and infections. Read it as a description, not a precise diagnosis.
As seen in a recordCause of death line on an early 1900s death certificate
Cause of death: Congestion of brain. Duration: 2 days.
