Continued fever

Continued fever was an old name for any fever that ran on for days or weeks without breaking; it named the pattern, not the disease behind it.

Older doctors sorted fevers by their pattern: intermittent fevers came and went, remittent fevers eased but did not stop, and continued fevers never broke. Webster's 1913 defines continued fever as a fever with no interruption in its course.

The label describes the pattern, not the germ, so the illness behind it cannot be known from the record alone.
