Dropsy of the ovary

Dropsy of the ovary meant a fluid-filled cyst of the ovary; old statistics counted it with ovarian cysts and other tumors of the ovary.

The 1911 Census Bureau manual indexes dropsy of ovary under cysts and other tumors of the ovary, beside cyst of ovary and encysted dropsy. IPUMS has a code for ovarian cyst and non-cancerous ovarian tumor.

Webster's 1913 gives ovarian as of or pertaining to an ovary. The 1911 manual asked doctors to state the kind of cyst or tumor.
