Hardening of the arteries

Hardening of the arteries is the plain English for arteriosclerosis, in which artery walls grow thick and stiff and slowly cut the flow of blood.

Arteriosclerosis literally means hardening of the arteries. It covers several diseases in which artery walls thicken, harden and lose their stretch, slowly restricting blood flow to organs and tissues.

IPUMS codes arteriosclerosis with aneurysm and other diseases of the arteries in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
