Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia meant paralysis of one side of the body, most often after a stroke; old records use it as a more exact word for palsy.

Webster's 1913 defines hemiplegia as a palsy that affects one side only of the body. The word comes from Greek for stricken on one side. Causes include stroke, brain injury, tumors and conditions present from birth.

IPUMS codes hemiplegia, paraplegia and other paralysis together, separate from apoplexy, in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
