Hemorrhage of the lungs

Hemorrhage of the lungs meant coughing up blood from the lungs, a sign rather than a disease, and very often the end of consumption.

The medical word is hemoptysis. Tuberculosis was the usual cause in the 1800s, but pneumonia, lung tumors and heart disease could also cause it.

When a young adult died of hemorrhage of the lungs, consumption is the likely background, especially if other family members died of it.
