Inflammation of the liver
Inflammation of the liver was the plain English for hepatitis; on old records it might mean infection, abscess or other liver disease.
Webster's 1913 defines hepatitis simply as inflammation of the liver. Today hepatitis is often traced to a virus, but an old record that names it gives no cause, so treat it as a general label for liver disease.
IPUMS codes cirrhosis and other diseases of the liver together in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
