Injury at birth
Injury at birth meant a baby hurt during delivery, for example by forceps or a long, hard labor, who died soon after.
IPUMS combines diseases of the umbilicus and injuries at birth in one code. The 1911 Census Bureau manual lists injury by forceps at birth among causes peculiar to early infancy, and also indexes shock of birth.
These are deaths of the infant, not of the mother.
As seen in a recordCause of death line, state death certificate, 1910s to 1930s
Cause: Injury at birth (forceps). Age: 1 d.
