Lack of care
Lack of care on an old record meant a newborn or young infant died for want of proper feeding, warmth or nursing.
IPUMS gives lack of care its own code among conditions of early infancy, next to premature birth and injuries at birth. The 1911 Census Bureau manual also has a title for lack of care, indexed for newborn infants.
The manual sends lack of care and insufficient nourishment of newborn infants to this title, not to starvation.
