Leucocythemia
Leucocythemia was an 1800s name for leukemia, a disease with a great increase of white cells in the blood and a swollen spleen or glands.
The word means white-cell blood in Greek. Webster's 1913 describes a disease in which the white corpuscles are greatly increased and the spleen or lymph glands swell, and gives leuchaemia as another name.
Leukemia was first described in 1827 and more fully by Rudolf Virchow in 1845. IPUMS codes Hodgkin's disease and leukemia together in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
