Peritonitis
Peritonitis means inflammation of the lining of the belly, often from a burst appendix, a perforated ulcer or bowel, or other belly disease.
The peritoneum lines the abdomen and covers the organs inside it. Webster's 1913 defines peritonitis as its inflammation. Causes include a ruptured appendix, a perforated stomach ulcer or bowel, and a burst gall bladder.
Peritonitis had its own code in the IPUMS scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
