Old causes of death · card V

Varioloid

Varioloid was a milder form of smallpox in a person who already had some protection, for example from an earlier attack.

The name means like variola, the medical word for smallpox. Patients had fewer and smaller pocks and usually recovered, but they could still pass full smallpox to others.

Varioloid deaths were uncommon. When the entry appears, check for smallpox in the same family or town, since quarantine notices and local newspapers often reported outbreaks.
