Camp meeting

A camp meeting was an outdoor revival lasting several days, where families camped in tents or wagons to hear preaching day and night.

Camp meetings drew on Presbyterian communion seasons and Methodist custom, and became a major part of the Second Great Awakening after the 1801 gathering at Cane Ridge, Kentucky. Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian preachers all led them.

A burst of new members received or baptized in late summer can follow a camp meeting. Some are still held today, mainly by Methodist and holiness groups.
