Lammas

Lammas is August 1, the old harvest festival called Loaf Mass, when bread from the new crop was blessed; it was used as a date in older records.

Lammas, from the Old English for loaf mass, falls on August 1. A loaf made from the first wheat of the harvest was brought to church to be blessed.

In English and colonial records it can serve as a date: "at Lammas" means August 1, or about the start of August.
