French words in old records · card B

baptême

Baptême is French for "baptism"; in a Catholic parish register it heads the entry for a child's baptism, with parents and godparents.

Baptême is both the sacrament and the name of the register entry, the acte de baptême. Catholic registers in Quebec begin with Notre-Dame de Québec in 1621, and the priest kept baptisms, marriages and burials together, which is why archivists call these BMS registers. In Acadia most parish registers were lost, many of them during the deportation of 1755, the Grand Dérangement.

A baptism entry names the child, the parents, the parrain and the marraine. Some entries also say how a godparent was related to the child, such as an uncle or a grandfather, which can point you to another generation.
