French words in old records · card M

mariage

Mariage is French for "marriage"; an acte de mariage records the wedding with the spouses, their parents, the banns and the witnesses.

From 1563 the Council of Trent required the priest to record the day and place of a marriage, the spouses' homes and the names and homes of the witnesses. In Quebec, Catholic marriage entries are usually fuller than Protestant ones, many of which do not name the parents of the bride and groom.

In France, from 1792 the civil marriage at the town hall had to come before the church wedding, and the two could be in different towns. Look for both records, since the civil one is often more detailed.
