Hebamme

Hebamme is German for "midwife"; German birth and baptism records sometimes name the midwife who delivered the child.

The Hebamme delivered children in German villages and towns. Some baptism entries and civil birth records name her, either as a witness or as the person who reported the birth.

A woman listed with the occupation Hebamme may appear in many entries of her parish over the years. When a newborn was in danger, a layperson such as the midwife could perform an emergency baptism, a Nottaufe.
