Broken rosebud

A rosebud with a broken stem on a gravestone usually marks a child or young person whose life was cut short.

A bud has not opened yet, and a snapped stem ends it before it can. Victorian families used the image for the death of a child, and it also appears on stones of teenagers and young adults.

Variations add to the message: a dove flying up with a broken rosebud in its beak is a child's soul going to heaven, and a bud beside two open roses can stand for parents and child. Check the dates, since a bud is a strong but not certain clue to age.

As seen in a recordMidwest town cemetery, 1860 to 1920
