Closed book
A closed book on a gravestone means a life story that is finished; the book of that life has been shut.
Victorian guides read a closed book as the end of a life: the person's story has been told to its last page. It may sit flat, stand on its edge or be held in a hand.
As with the open book, a closed book with Holy Bible on the cover is a Bible and points to faith instead. A closed book is a sentiment, not evidence that the person was a scholar.
