Hand pointing down
A hand pointing down on a gravestone is God's hand reaching for the soul; it does not mean the person went to hell.
A common worry is that a downward finger means damnation. It does not: a study of Victorian stones reads it as God's hand reaching down to lift the soul to heaven.
Some guides add that it can mark a sudden or unexpected death, and others read it as mortality in general. A hand from the clouds plucking a chain link or a flower carries the same idea of God choosing the time.
