Poppy
A poppy on a gravestone stands for eternal sleep, peace and rest, drawing on the flower's old link with sleep.
The poppy has long been tied to sleep, and Victorians thought of the dead as sleeping, the word cemetery itself meaning a sleeping place. Cemetery guides read a carved poppy as eternal sleep, peace and rest.
It is a gentle, general symbol and fits stones with words like At Rest or Asleep. On its own it tells you nothing about the person's age or faith.
