Star

A star on a gravestone usually stands for divine guidance, hope and eternal life; a five-pointed star with its point down marks the Eastern Star.

Guides read a carved star as divine guidance, hope, immortality or the light of the Holy Spirit overcoming death. Some link the five points to the five wounds of Christ.

Several stars have specific meanings: a five-pointed star pointing down, often colored or lettered, is the Order of the Eastern Star; a six-pointed star is the Star of David; a metal star by a grave may be a G.A.R. marker. Check before you settle on a meaning.
