Emigrant
An emigrant is a person who leaves his own country to settle in another; seen from the new country, the same traveler is an immigrant.
The difference is only the point of view: out of the old country or into the new one. Nineteenth century Americans often used emigrant where we would say immigrant. New York's state Board of Emigration Commissioners, for example, ran Castle Garden, officially the Emigrant Landing Depot.
Records made on the departure side, such as European passenger and passport lists, call the person an emigrant, so a family story about an emigrant ancestor points to records in two countries.
