N.O.B.

N.O.B. on a passenger list means not on board: the person was booked but did not sail, so the entry is not a record of an arrival.

Late changes of plan, illness or a missed ship left names on lists already drawn up. Clerks lined them out or wrote N.O.B., did not sail or not shipped, because the line paid head tax by the list.

A crossed-out name is not always a no-show: some passengers were moved to another class and recorded on another page. Look for the same person on a later ship, since many simply took the next sailing.
