Nonstatistical

Nonstatistical on a border record marks an arrival not counted in immigration statistics, usually a Western Hemisphere native not subject to the head tax.

At the Canadian and Mexican borders officials sorted arrivals into statistical and nonstatistical classes. Statistical arrivals were generally subject to the head tax and not from the Western Hemisphere. Nonstatistical arrivals were usually natives of the hemisphere not subject to the tax; before about 1930, residents of Canada or Mexico coming for under six months were not counted at all.

The rules changed several times and were not applied the same way at every port. A nonstatistical card still records a crossing, and some note later visits and their purpose on the back.
