By whom was passage paid

By whom was passage paid is a passenger list question recording whether the immigrant paid his own fare or someone else paid it.

The question is on the list forms used from March 1903. From 1907 the heading spells out the choices: whether the alien paid his own passage, or whether it was paid by any other person, or by any corporation, society, municipality or government. Statistical cards used at the Mexican border also recorded who paid the passage.

An answer naming a relative is a small family clue. Compare it with the going-to-join column on the same line, which often names the same person and gives an address in America.
