Petition for naturalization
A petition for naturalization was the formal court application for U.S. citizenship, filed after the waiting period that followed the declaration of intention.
In the usual two-step process, an immigrant filed the petition some years after the declaration, once he had lived in the country at least five years. A judge decided whether the applicant qualified and granted or denied it, and the clerk entered the order in the court's records.
Petitions filed from September 27, 1906 on use standard forms that give the petitioner's birth, arrival details, and the names and details of wife and children. Earlier petitions vary by court and may hold little more than a name, a country and a date.
