St. Albans lists

The St. Albans lists are U.S. records of immigrants who landed at Canadian ports bound for the U.S. or crossed the northern border, 1895 to 1954.

Many immigrants sailed to Quebec, Montreal, Halifax or St. John and took the train south, some to avoid U.S. inspection. From 1895, U.S. inspectors worked at Canadian ports and border crossings and filed their lists in Montreal; the records later came to the National Archives from the office in St. Albans, Vermont, hence the name.

Despite it, they cover the whole northern border, not only Vermont. Start with the Soundex card index, which is complete for 1895 to 1917.
