Equity of redemption
The equity of redemption is a mortgagor's right to get his land back by paying the debt, even after the due date, until foreclosure ends that right.
Courts of equity let a borrower who missed the payment date still redeem the land by paying the debt with interest. That right is the equity of redemption, and foreclosure is the process that cuts it off.
In many states the borrower also has a statutory right of redemption for a period after a foreclosure sale, and is entitled to any surplus from the sale.
