Final certificate

A final certificate was issued by a local land office once a claimant met all requirements, declaring the land entry ready for a federal patent.

When a buyer paid for public land, surrendered a warrant or proved a homestead, the local land office forwarded the case file to the General Land Office in Washington with a final certificate stating the claim qualified for a patent.

Together with the state, land office and type of entry, the final certificate number is what you need to request most pre-1908 land entry files from the National Archives.
