Year's support
A year's support is property set apart from a dead person's estate for the surviving spouse and minor children, a probate term still used in Georgia.
A year's support takes property out of the estate for the family before creditors and other heirs are paid. Despite the name, the Georgia award is permanent, not a one-year allowance, and it can be claimed even when there is a will.
Other states have similar family allowances, set by each state's law, meant to support the spouse and children while the estate is settled.
