American Legion

The American Legion is the U.S. veterans' organization founded in Paris in March 1919 by members of the American Expeditionary Forces, organized in local posts.

About a thousand officers and enlisted men, delegates from AEF units, met in Paris on March 15 to 17, 1919, adopted a constitution and chose the name. Congress chartered the Legion that September. It is made up of state departments, which are made up of local posts, and has a women's Auxiliary.

The Legion pushed hard for the 1924 World War I bonus law and led the drafting of the G.I. Bill of 1944. A post name and number in an obituary point to the local post.
