Final pension payment voucher

A final pension payment voucher records the last payment on a pension, often giving the pensioner's death date and the heirs who collected it.

When a pensioner died, money due up to the date of death could be collected by the widow or children, and the Treasury filed the paperwork for that last payment. Vouchers may name the spouse, county of residence, the pension act, the final amount, the death date of the veteran or widow, surviving children and the estate administrator.

NARA staff pulled Revolutionary War examples into a separate series, Selected Final Pension Payment Vouchers, 1818 to 1864, arranged by the state where the veteran lived at death. They can supply a death date missing from every other record.
