Morning report

A morning report was the daily Army unit report, made each morning by the unit clerk, listing changes in each soldier's status from the day before.

The clerk of each basic unit recorded transfers in and out, temporary duty elsewhere, leave, promotions and losses, using abbreviations such as KIA, WIA, MIA and AWOL. The commanding officer signed the report, and it fed the Army's central personnel records.

Army morning reports and unit rosters from 1912 to 1968 are archival records at the National Archives in St. Louis, open by appointment in its research room; rosters for 1944 to 1946 were destroyed. You usually need the exact unit and an approximate date to search them.
