Paroled
Paroled means a captured or surrendered soldier was released on his sworn pledge not to take up arms until properly exchanged, or ever again.
Under the Dix-Hill Cartel of 1862, both armies released prisoners on parole and later declared them exchanged for an equal value of enemy captives. Once exchanged, the parole no longer applied and the man could rejoin his regiment and fight.
When the Confederate armies surrendered in 1865, their soldiers gave their parole never again to bear arms against the Union and went home. A Confederate service record that ends with paroled in spring 1865 usually marks that surrender, not a capture in battle.
