Elsie

Elsie was a nickname for Alice in American records of the 1700s and 1800s, and in Scotland a pet form of Elizabeth too.

Elsie is given as a form of Alice on lists of 18th and 19th century nicknames, and some lists add Eleanor, Ellen and Helen. In Scotland it was also a pet form of Elizabeth, through Elspeth, and it was given as a name of its own.

In a search, try both names. An index may list her only as Elsie, while her baptism or marriage record gives Alice.

As seen in a recordCounty newspaper death notice, 1903; her death certificate gives Alice
Mrs. Elsie Ashdown, aged 65, died at her home Jan. 3, 1903
