Hetty

Hetty is an old nickname for Hester, Esther, Henrietta or Mehitable, found in American records of the 1700s and 1800s.

Hetty was a short form of Hester and Esther, two forms of the same name, and also of Henrietta. Lists of 18th and 19th century nicknames add Mehitable.

A gravestone or a family Bible may say Hetty while a will or a deed says Hester. Search indexes under both forms so you do not miss her. Because Hetty served for more than one name, see which full name the same woman carries in other records.

As seen in a recordTown marriage register, 1797; her baptism gives her name as Hester
Ezra Upchurch and Hetty Drinkwater, both of this town, married 13 Nov. 1797
