Peggy

Peggy was a common nickname for Margaret in American records of the 1700s and 1800s.

Peggy grew out of Meggy, a pet form of Margaret, by the change of M to P that also turned Molly into Polly. A Vita Brevis guide from American Ancestors lists it among the usual nicknames for Margaret in American research.

In a search, try both names. An index may list her only as Peggy, while her baptism or marriage record gives Margaret.

As seen in a recordGravestone, 1830; her husband's will calls her Margaret
Peggy, wife of Asa Mapes, died July 3, 1830, aged 50 years
