introduceret
Introduceret means a mother was "introduced" back into church after childbirth, the churching rite, which Norwegian church books record with its date.
A new mother was considered unclean for about 40 days. Five or six weeks after the birth the priest met her at the church door, spoke a short blessing and led her in. Some registers keep a separate section for introductions, but most note them with the baptisms. The woman herself was called an inngangskone.
The rite was required by law until 1754 and then faded at different speeds, in some places lasting into the 1900s. It was for mothers of legitimate children; a mother of an illegitimate child returned through public absolution instead.
