plass
A plass (older spelling plads) was a husmand's holding: a cottage, often with a little land, that belonged to a larger farm.
FamilySearch explains husmannsplass as the parcel of land or cottage where a husmand lived, and pladsen as the cottage and houses he occupied. The plass was not assessed as a property of its own; it counted as part of the main farm.
The names of such holdings are usually missing from the 1801 census. From 1865 the census includes them, listed under the main farm, which helps place a cotter family on the map.
