Broker
A broker arranged sales between buyers and sellers for a commission, as a stockbroker, cotton broker or real estate broker.
A broker is an independent go-between who brings buyers and sellers together and is usually paid a commission when the deal is done. A broker who buys or sells on his own account becomes a party to the deal instead, and an agent who acts for one side is something else again.
Wiktionary gives stockbroker as a second sense of the bare word. A pawnbroker is a different trade, with its own entry in this dictionary.
