Cigar maker

A cigar maker rolled cigars by hand from tobacco leaves, in a factory or a small shop that was sometimes in the maker's own home.

Hand rolling a cigar took skill: the maker shaped a bunch of filler leaves, wrapped it in a binder and finished it with a fine wrapper leaf. Cigar making was a large trade in many cities and employed many immigrants.

Whole families sometimes made cigars in tenement rooms. If several members of one household are cigar makers, they may have worked together at home.
